Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse, an historical consultant in Amsterdam, was at a flea market in 2007 when she came across a box of old negatives of scenes from World War II. She recognized some of the locales and set out to photograph the exact same spots to compare. Much like what San Francisco-based photographer Shawn Clover is doing with shots of the 1906 earthquake (previously
here), Teeuwisse digitally melds the two time streams to create a startling--and in this case heart-wrenching--unique perspective.
This negative...
...plus this current photo in Cherbourg...
...creates this.
Here are more from her chilling "Ghosts of War" series.
