San Francisco-based photographer Shawn Clover has done a remarkable thing by digitally compositing photos of the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake with up-to-the-minute shots of the exact same view. The results are rather shocking. I live in the SF Bay Area and know The City well, and it is heartbreaking to see things like Chinatown heaped with rubble, and shocking to see, simply laying in the road, dead horses killed by the falling debris. This kind of destruction is nearly unfathomable to me. But many lived through it, and lived to see a rebuilt and vibrant city.
